At first glance it would appear that with a base price of $28,500 the 2022 Ford Bronco is more affordable than the 2022 Defender price which starts at $47,700.  But in order to deliver the features and off-road capabilities of a base level Defender you would need to upgrade to the higher Bronco trim levels which significantly inflate the initial cost of a 2022 Bronco to $42,095 for a Badlands edition or $46,980 for the Bronco Widetrak.  So once you start comparing a Defender and a Bronco with comparable features and capabilities then the price difference becomes much smaller.

Everyday Driving

Both the Ford Bronco and the Defender are built for rugged off-road performance but when it comes to daily driving and versatility, the Defender offers the superior experience.  The 2022 Defender boasts better on road handling and a smoother ride due to its unibody construction, rather than the body on frame construction of the Ford Bronco which delivers a more truck like handling and ride.  The Ford Bronco can seat 5 in varying levels of comfort, but with the appropriate options the more versatile Defender can accommodate up to 7.

Defender vs. Bronco Off-Road Comparison

The Defender and the Bronco both offer impressive suites of available off-roading technology and performance.  The Defender 90 has the advantage in breakover angle at 31.0 degrees to 29.0 degrees and departure angle at 40.0 to 37.2 degrees, while the Bronco 2-door has an advantage in approach angle at 43.2 degrees to 38.0 for the Defender 90.  The maximum ground clearance for the two SUVs is nearly identical at 11.6 and 11.5 inches respectively, but in a nod to its off-road adventuring roots the Defender has a higher maximum wading depth of 35.4 inches to 33.5 inches for the Bronco.  Coupled with its available adjustable air spring suspension the 2022 Defender packs a bit more innovation into its off-road experience.

Defender vs Bronco Engine Options

The standard engines for both the Defender and Ford Bronco offer plenty of punch.  Both are powered by turbocharged direct injected inline four cylinder engines.  The Ford Bronco  engine is slightly larger at 2.3L compared with 2.0L for the Defender, but the Defender provides more power at 296 HP to 275 for the Ford Bronco.  Both offer V6 engine options with the Ford checking in at 2.7L and 310 HP and the Defender topping out at 3.0L and 395 HP from its mild-hybrid V6.  For the truest off-road enthusiasts the Defender is now available with a 518-hp supercharged V-8 engine that can get the new 2022 Defender from 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds.  As of yet the Ford Bronco is not being offered with an option for a V-8.

Hauling and Towing

The Defender 90 and Defender 110 offer superior towing capacity to their Bronco counterparts.   Both the Bronco 2-door and 4-door are capable of towing up to 3500 pounds, enough to tow a jet ski or a small open utility trailer.  With a maximum towing capacity of 8201, for a braked trailer the Defender is clearly the more capable towing vehicle.  If you are considering a towed trailer or camper the Defender allows you to choose from a greater variety of options from large to small.
