If you're shopping for a compact luxury SUV, you probably have the 2018 Land Rover Discovery Sport and the 2018 BMW X3 on your list of models to test drive. 


Land Rover updated the engine options on the 2018 Discover Sport, increasing the power and efficiency on the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. This engine also has two output levels: 251 pound-feet of torque and 237 horsepower on the base version, and 295 pound-feet of torque and 286 horsepower on the HSE and HSE Luxury trim levels. Both versions pair with a nine-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard.

Beneath the hood of the 2018 BMW X3 is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, rating at 258 pound-feet of torque and 248 horsepower. You can also upgrade to a 3.0-liter V-6 engine. 

Luxury & Convenience

Standard equipment in the well-equipped SE trim of the Discovery Sport includes power front seats, a 10-speaker sound system with a USB media player interface, Bluetooth connectivity, an 8-inch touch screen, and four USB charging ports in the two rows of seating. In the higher trim levels, features include a hands-free liftgate, proximity entry, full leather upholstery, memory functions for the front seats, navigation, and ambient interior lighting. 

The BMW X3 has simulated leather upholstery, a smaller 6.5-inch display screen, and a single USB port on the base trim.

Safety & Security

Every Discovery Sport has a rearview camera, air bags throughout the cabin, emergency brake assist, and stability and traction control. You can also add lane departure warning, automatic braking, automatic parking, and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. With the X3, standard safety includes advanced front and side-impact air bags, a rearview camera, frontal collision warning with automatic braking, and speed limited information. It's also available with the active safety features in several packages.


The base MSRP for the Discovery sport is $37,795, while the X3 starts at $41,000.

Fuel Economy

EPA estimates for the 2018 Discovery Sport are 21 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway, and 22 mpg combined. The X3 estimates are 22 mpg in the city, 29 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg combined with the base engine, or 20 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined with the V-6 engine.


A new Discovery Sport is covered under a 4-year/50,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty. The BMW warranty includes a 12-year/unlimited mileage rust perforation limited warranty, a 4-year/50,000-mile limited warranty, and the BMW Ultimate Care plan.



The 2018 Land Rover Discovery measures in at 73 inches in height, 195.7 inches in length, 66.5 inches and 66.4 inches in front and wheel tracks, respectively, and 81.6 inches in width with the mirrors folded in. When the mirrors are folded out, the width increases to 87.4 inches. The cargo area size is 85 cubic feet behind the seats. Front passengers have 40 inches of headroom, while rear passengers have 39 inches.

The 2018 BMW X3 is slightly smaller, measuring 185.9 inches in length. The cargo area is also smaller, offering a capacity of 62.7 cubic feet behind the row of seating.
