2018 LAND ROVER VELAR VS 2018 PORSCHE MACAN

The luxury SUV market has been evolving over the past couple of decades, with several automakers entering this segment from a background in sedans or sports cars. Land Rover's Range Rover, started in England in the 1940s, was one of the earliest of the four-wheel-drive standard utility vehicles before the classification even existed. Porsche has an equally storied past as a producer of iconic sports cars for over seven decades. Both of these companies have brought their extensive backgrounds and expertise to bear with their entries to the small luxury SUV market.

Performance

In the smaller SUV category, the following two models certainly pack a lot of pep. The 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar boasts several engine choices. You can opt for a 2.0-liter engine with 177 horsepower, a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with 247 horsepower, or a jaw-dropping 3.0-liter with 380 horsepower. The 2018 Porsche Macan offers either a 2.0-liter engine with 252 horsepower or a 3.6-liter twin-turbo engine with 340 horsepower.

Both models feature four-cylinder engines, available V-6 options, and all-wheel drive. For off-roading adventures, the Land Rover Range Rover Velar additionally offers the Hill Descent Control feature that allows drivers to raise the vehicle slightly for better ground clearance on uneven surfaces.

Luxury & Convenience

The Velar and the Macan both boast posh interior finishes and amenities that you would expect from these top-of-the-line automakers. Leather interiors are standard on both models, along with luxury touches like powered, heated seats and leather-wrapped steering wheels. The infotainment system on the Porsche is powered by its Porsche Communication Management interface, with a 7-inch touchscreen to control audio and navigation. The Velar InControl® infotainment system is accessed via a 12.3-inch information display guided by intuitive touchscreen prompts. The dual-screen system in the Velar is a nice touch, controlling everything from satellite navigation to the various nuanced terrain response settings (sand, mud, ruts, gravel, etc.).

Measurements

The Land Rover Range Rover Velar offers 34.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, which becomes a whopping 70.1 cubic feet when the seats are folded down. The Macan comes in with a tighter 18 cubic feet behind the rear seats, which increases to 53 cubic feet when the seats are laid flat. The Velar is about 4 inches longer than the Macan and offers a higher ground clearance, which is important for navigating terrain and for clear views ahead.

Pricing

On the Land Rover Range Rover Velar, the MSRP is $49,900 for the base model, while the Porsche Macan comes in with an MSRP of $47,800 for its base version.

Both the Land Rover Range Rover Velar and the Porsche Macan are excellent choices for anyone searching for a luxury SUV. The Land Rover company has a long history of pairing refined English elegance with rugged, time-honored performance. The Velar's higher-performing engine options and enormous cargo storage potential, coupled with truly state-of-the-art interior comfort and performance options will have you happily riding up and down the mountain, glacier, or ravine in plush style.
